Litli-Hrútur Eruption 2023 - The New Eruption near Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes Peninsula

Once again, the enthralling spectacle of Iceland's Reykjanes volcano is back in the limelight! Here is what you need to know.

July 10, 2023

After 11 months of peaceful dormancy, the volcano is now alive and kicking, treating locals and tourists to another captivating visual performance. If you've been yearning for an adventure that's truly out of this world, this might just be your calling!

The history of Fagradalsfjall

In March, 2021, Fagradalsfjall Volcano was formed as the volcanic system on reykjanes peninsula erupted for the first time in 815 years. Following extensive seismic activity, lava spewed up to 100 meters high from a newly formed fissure near Fagradalsfjall. The eruption spread across a 1-km-long rift, filling the Geldingadalur valley with lava and creating a beautiful spectacle until September 18. The eruption was named Fagradalsfjall or Geldingadalir eruption

In the next eruption on August 3, 2022, a 300-meter-long fissure emerged in the Meradalir Valley, adjacent to the earlier eruption site. With lava fountains reaching similar heights and a higher eruption rate, this event resulted in new lava rivers flowing down the valley. By August 21, the eruption had ceased, but future activity was expected. This event was given the name Meradalir eruption.

Litli-Hrútur Eruption

With bated breath, we've been monitoring the tell-tale signs of an impending eruption - the intense seismic activity, the ground subtly trembling beneath our feet. And finally, Fagradalsfjall has delivered again on the 10th of July.

Much like its two recent predecessors, this eruption is a mesmerising effusive display. Despite the furious heat, it maintains a deceptive tranquility, presenting no imminent threat to human life, infrastructure, or even aviation.

Imagine molten earth flowing gently, weaving fiery rivers across the rugged terrain, and glowing under the midnight sun with its vivid hues. Such eruptions are a marvel to witness. Unlike their explosive counterparts, which belch ash clouds and hurl magma violently, effusive eruptions offer a tamer, albeit equally spectacular, show.

The new eruption is named Litli-Hrútur eruption, after the valley where it occurred.

The Thrill of Being Up Close

One of the most intriguing aspects of effusive eruptions is their relative tranquillity. This allows for the rare opportunity to observe the majesty of the event up close. That’s right, you can stand at a safe distance and watch the earth bleed molten rock in real-time - an adventure that's as exhilarating as it sounds.

However, let's not forget that even the calmest of volcanoes demand respect. We must remain vigilant. Always adhere to the guidelines issued by the authorities and keep an eye on safetravel.is for any crucial updates.

As long as we respect the guidelines and appreciate the power of this natural wonder from a safe distance, we're in for a splendid spectacle that's both thrilling and enriching.
