What Are Super Jeeps?
These large, highly modified, all-terrain vehicles with massive suspension systems and tires ranging from 38" to 46" are known as "super jeeps."
The name "jeep" is said to have originated from World War II when the US Army brought their "general purpose vehicle" over. The phrase “general purpose” or “GP” was slurred until the name stuck as “jeep.” This name was translated to Icelandic as “jeppi.” When the vehicles began to be modified with bigger tires, they called them “super jeeps.”
Their popularity in modern tourism, particularly in Iceland, is due to their ability to reach places that regular four-wheel-drive cars cannot. Super jeeps can traverse ice, deep snow, mud, or volcanic sand, cross arctic torrents, and navigate harsh lava fields to reach the highlands of Iceland. These vehicles have been modified with larger tires, extended suspension, and a special lift kit to increase ride height, allowing them to drive over bigger road obstacles and through deep water crossings without getting stuck or wet.
They are also equipped with 4x4 drive for better traction and an engine-mounted air compressor used to inflate and deflate the tires to adjust the pressure for different terrains. Super jeeps can take you to some of the most remote places in Iceland, and the country is sharing its knowledge and expertise in modifying jeeps and trucks to other nations with challenging terrains.
