Grindavík, once a thriving fishing village, now stands as a stark reminder of nature’s unstoppable power. Recently evacuated due to volcanic activity, the town has become mostly uninhabitable, bearing the scars of recent eruptions.

This tour takes you deep into the heart of the Reykjanes Peninsula, where you’ll witness the dramatic collision between human resilience and the raw, untamable forces of nature. Explore the aftermath of the volcanic eruptions and see firsthand how Grindavík has been transformed by these powerful events.

Your carbon-neutral journey begins with a pickup in Reykjavík, followed by a scenic drive through volcanic landscapes and along rugged coastlines. Our first stop is Seltún geothermal Area, where you can marvel at bubbling mud pools and steaming vents, showcasing nature's raw power.

Next, we’ll head to Fagradalsfjall Volcano, Iceland’s youngest volcano. The 45-minute hike will take us across still-warm lava fields to a viewpoint overlooking the fresh lava from recent eruptions. The total hike is about 5.5 km (3.4 miles) with a moderate elevation gain, suitable for anyone in good physical condition.

After exploring the lava fields, we’ll visit the coastal village of Grindavík, where you’ll witness how the town’s brave residents quickly constructed protective barriers during the eruptions to shield it from lava flows. You’ll also learn about the dramatic rifts created by tectonic shifts, forever altering the landscape and the lives of those who once called this place home.

We’ll stop for a delicious fish and chips lunch featuring fresh local seafood, before heading back to Reykjavík with unforgettable memories of Grindavík and the volcanic wonders of Reykjanes Geopark.

Tour Highlights

  • Visit to the Fagradalsfjall eruption site
  • Explore the steaming hot Seltún geothermal area

"Unforgettable"

My husband won't stop talking about this excursion or showing people the photos and videos he took - which is not at all like him! He would agree with everything Ninny Ebaum has just written - it was cloudy and hail fell at the top of the fairly arduous climb so you do need warm, waterproof clothes and good boots. Going back down was more difficult because of the scree and angle of the slope but this was a once in a lifetime experience that he, our son and his wife will never forget. I was glad to stay behind with our granddaughter who was below the age limit of 9 years! They would have liked more time to enjoy the experience which was over too soon.

"The volcano hike was an experience of a lifetime!"

We took the guided volcano hike. The bus picked us up on time, and our guide, Raven, gave us information as we drove to the trail head. The information provided by Reykjavik Excursions on the hike were right on! It was the degree of difficulty they said (moderate), took the amount of time to climb, both up and down (1 1/2 hours each way), the equipment they recommended was correct. If it had rained, we were prepared- luckily it did not. And we had the perfect amount of time to observe the volcano. Raven did the hike with our group. Even with different speeds, she kept in contact, and was so knowledgeable and helpful, and interesting!! She was great and added to an awesome experience!

"What an adventure, do it!"

The highlight of my holiday! I was feeling nervous about this hike as I wasn't sure what to expect but there were people of varying abilities doing the hike and everyone looked out for one another. The tour guide was very informative and made sure that everyone got up and down the volcano ok. The path was full of snow but we were advised on the best places to walk. Even though the volcano finished erupting last year, you could still feel the heat from the lava and see the gases as the lava takes months, even years to fully solidify underneath. Be prepared for all weather's as it was lovely at the bottom of the volcano and snowing when we got up there. Book this trip if you love hiking, it isn't for the faint hearted but worth doing if you can. Also, I felt like I could go at my own pace which was what I was nervous about

Not only do you walk up the volcano but you get to see other geothermal relates places after your walk. Well worth the money!
